How it Works
Step-by-Step: How RNG Buyers Purchase Gas and Receive Environmental Credits
RNG is cleaned and upgraded to meet pipeline-quality specifications.
Once upgraded, the RNG is chemically indistinguishable from conventional natural gas.
The gas is injected into an interstate or local transmission pipeline and consumed within the broader natural gas network.
Injection of RNG generates a variety of environmental attributes, depending on the jurisdiction and applicable program, including:
- RINs under the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard
- LCFS credits under California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard
- RTCs (Renewable Thermal Certificates), issued per molecule of gas injected
- CFR credits under the Canadian Clean Fuel Regulations
- ISCC EU / ISCC+ certification supporting global sustainability and traceability requirements
Environmental attributes are tracked and verified through established systems to ensure integrity and prevent double counting, such as:
- EPA EMTS (for RINs)
- California LRT-CBTS (for LCFS)
- CleanCounts / M-RETS (for RTCs)
- ISCC EU / ISCC+
- Voluntary carbon registries for corporate sustainability claims
Buyers—including utilities, fuel providers, fleets, maritime operators, and corporations with decarbonization commitments—may purchase RNG and its attributes through several pathways:
PHYSICAL DELIVERY: RNG is delivered through a pipeline or transported via tube trailer for injection near the point of use.
MASS BALANCE: RNG molecules enter the pipeline system, and the buyer receives the corresponding RTCs, ensuring a certified chain of custody.
DISPLACEMENT: RNG is injected at a Mobius Renewables injection point, and the buyer receives RTCs that correspond to the environmental attributes of that gas
ENVIRONMENTAL ATTRIBUTES ONLY: Buyers may purchase RINs, LCFS credits, RTCs (CleanCounts), CFR credits, or ISCC EU/ISCC+ certificates without taking physical delivery of gas

Our Blended Solutions Framework:
1. Certified RNG Production/Creation of Environmental Attributes - issued as serialized credits and tracked through established certification systems, including RINs, RTCs, CFR, and ISCC EU/ISCC+, ensuring full transparency, traceability, and third-party verification.
2. Customized Blended Supply Structure - We develop a tailored supply structure that includes:
- Physical natural gas delivered through standard pipeline infrastructure, and
- A specified volume of certified RNG matched to your sustainability and budgeting requirements.
3. Contractual Assignment of Environmental Attributes - Through the contractual transfer of certified RNG credits, your organization may credibly claim the environmental benefits associated with RNG consumption. This structure supports:
- Documented emissions-reduction claims
- Compliance with recognized sustainability frameworks

Once purchased, environmental attributes are retired on behalf of the buyer for:
- Regulatory compliance, such as meeting LCFS or RFS obligations
